The Domínguez–Escalante expedition was a 1776 Spanish exploratory journey led by Franciscan friars Francisco Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante that sought an overland route from New Mexico to California and extensively mapped parts of the American Southwest.
